Drama and Theatre

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades 9 - 4 including a grade 6 in Drama and grade 4 in English Language

Course content

Three components:

  1. Drama and Theatre – Written Exam – 40% of A Level
    Study of two set plays Hedda Gabler and Metamorphosis and a piece of Live Professional Theatre.
  2. Creating Original Drama – Internal Practical Assessment - 30% of A Level
    Creating a piece of devised Drama that is performed to an audience based on the methodology of a given Practitioner.
  3. Making Theatre – Practical Exam – 30% of A Level
    Practical exploration of three extracts from three different plays, the third of which is performed to a Visiting Examiner and must be based on the methodology of a prescribed Practitioner (different to the Practitioner for component 2).

Assessment

  1. Drama and Theatre (Written)
    3 hour Written Exam – 40% of A Level (80 Marks)
    • Section A: one question (from a choice) on one of the set plays from List A (25 marks)
    • Section B: one two part question on a given extract from one of the set plays from List B (25 marks)
    • Section C: one question on the work of theatre makers in a single live theatre production (30 marks)
  2. Creating Original Drama (Practical)
    Internal assessment – 30% of A Level (60 marks)
    Process of Creating Devised Drama – Working Notebook (40 marks)
    Performance of Devised Drama (students may contribute as a performer, director or designer) (20 marks)
  3. Making Theatre (Practical)
    External assessment – 30% of A Level (60 marks)
    Performance of Extract 3 (40 marks)
    Reflective Report (20 marks)
