Entry requirements
5 GCSE grades 9- 4 with a grade 5 or above in GCSE Art and Design.
Students must also have a genuine interest in visual arts and other cultures, enthusiasm, determination, initiative and an ability to work independently.
Students who have a GCSE grade 4 or above in Design and Technology will have an additional advantage.
Course content
Students must take assessments in all three of the following components in the same series:
Component 1: Breadth study - 1G Challenge and transformation: Britain, c1851–1964
Component 2: Depth study - 2R The Cold War, c1945–1991
Component 3: Historical investigation (Personal study).
Component 1: Breadth study - The study of significant historical developments over a period of around 100 years and associated interpretations.
Component 2: Depth study - The study in depth of a period of major historical change or development and associated primary evidence.
Component 3: Historical investigation -
A personal study based on a topic of student's choice.
This should take the form of a question in the context of approximately 100 years.

- written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
- three questions (one compulsory)
- 80 marks
- 40% of A-level

- Section B – two from three essays (2 x 25 marks)

Why History at Samuel Ryder Academy?
History at Samuel Ryder will allow students to understand the significance of historical events, the role of individuals in history and the nature of change over time, and help them to gain a deeper understanding of the past through political, social, economic and cultural perspectives.
Samuel Ryder history students will have the benefit of being taught by highly qualified teachers educated to master’s degree level, with over 15 years of teaching experience collectively. Smaller class sizes allow for a bespoke learning experience, with students receiving one to one support inside and outside of the classroom.
Expectations of students
Students must be able to meet deadlines for weekly essays. They must be prepared to carry out wider reading, for example biographies and academic articles. History is a challenging subject, but as a result one that is highly valued by higher education establishments. Therefore students will need to show resilience and a professional attitude to their studies and revision.
