Samuel Ryder Academy

Overview

Our Sixth Form is in the top 10% in the country for teaching and learning and student progression and we pride ourselves on our commitment to offering excellent pastoral and academic support.

Small class sizes, high quality teaching and academic mentoring underpins each student’s personalised program.  The Sixth Form team encourages all students to develop a sense of enjoyment and love for learning; motivating students to become responsible people who positively impact on our changing world.

We are committed to creating exciting enrichment opportunities: study skills, guest speakers and extra-curricular activities. At SRA students become an integral part of the wider school community by offering support to younger students, which helps to develop their personal and inter-personal qualities in preparation for life beyond school.

A central characteristic of SRA is that the high expectations we have of our students are matched by the high expectations our students have of themselves. A high proportion of our students obtain their first choice university places and there is personalised support and guidance for those who wish to progress directly into employment.

Employability is high on the Sixth Form agenda and our partnership with Deloitte LLP provides a unique mentoring programme in addition to a range of employability workshops to encourage our students to become independent and proactive learners.

The added benefit of being part of an all-through Academy is the enrichment opportunities in leadership and valuable work experience for those wishing to pursue a career in teaching.

Facilities & Resources

As a new technologies and English specialist school, we benefit from a television studio with industry standard equipment, including Mac computers in the media suite and Sixth Form. Students have iPads to support their work and develop skills using these and a range of technologies in readiness for Higher Education or work. With extensive sports facilities, including an indoor pool and dance studio, we offer a range of activities both as part of the BTEC Sport course and Sixth Form lessons. Students can also work collaboratively during their independent study periods within a designated Sixth Form area.

Specialist Areas

English is one of the school’s specialisms and because of this we are one of only a few schools to offer both English Literature and English Language A levels. The expertise in the classroom is demonstrated by the excellent results achieved. Media is offered at both A level and BTEC, providing opportunities to pursue the academic aspect of the subject or the more practical and vocational route. Students achieve at the highest level on both courses and progress to highly regarded institutions and employment. Mathematics and Chemistry are both very successful subjects, past students have gained places at Russell Group universities to continue the subject at degree level.
